The Government's National Taskforce on Obesity has reportedly recommended a range of sweeping measures to improve diet and physical health across the country
Reports this morning said the taskforce had recommended an increase in VAT on unhealthy food and drinks and a reduction in VAT on healthier products.
It has also reportedly recommended a greater focus on PE in schools, an end to fast-food sponsorship of children's events, a ban on the marketing of junk food to children and an increased emphasis on exercise and play areas in town planning.
The taskforce's recommendations are due to be published by the Taoiseach this afternoon.
The group was set up in response to growing concerns about a 67% increase in obesity levels in Ireland in the past 10 years.
